A brief story of resin in jewellery

We are passionate about creating and offering you unique styles and sharing how they are made. Learn more about one of the resources featured in our products.

When it comes to our Terracotta Collection, the resin is the centrepiece. Featured in different shapes, sizes and colours, this is a material that allows creative designs with lightweight and durable characteristics. Plus, it has a long story that we would love to share with you.

Resin has been used for quite a long time all over the world, for many different purposes. There is no exact date for its first use, but some evidence found dates back to Ancient Greece, with it being formulated from natural extracts. The development of chemical formulations and epoxy resin is a bit newer, discovered in the 1930s.

Over the years, the use of resin became more common in the industry sector, especially between the 40s and 50s, when it also started to be popular in art. In consequence, jewellers also began to develop their designs using resin compounds for locking in and preserving natural materials.

Resin refers to compounds in liquid form that harden under heat, light, or other setting agents. When hardened, the resin becomes incredibly strong and can add a translucent or opaque layer of colour to a variety of designs.

The process of elaborating resin jewellery may vary according to the design wanted, but the general idea stays the same. It combines liquid resin with a hardener substance or agent while creating the desired design and colours, being poured into a cast with the shape wanted. Once finished, the resin pieces are super resistant and light in weight, offering original and vibrant styles for your jewellery.

At Ornamental, the resin is used to create beads, earrings, pendants and more, with a diversified range of shades, colours and formats. We also love to mix and match the different resin-made items we present, to offer you the most unique styles.

These pieces are a must-have in any jewellery collection, as they feature creativity and are super comfortable to wear. Plus, no matter what is your outfit for the day (or night!), they are versatile and will match any fashion trend.
